COLUMBIA, S.C. - Gamecock volleyball’s Aubrey Ezell was recognized Wednesday morning by the SEC as a member of its seven-woman All-Freshman team. The team’s first-year setter has been a steady presence in her first season at Carolina, as the only member of the team who has started in every match and has not missed a single set. She is the first Gamecock to make the All-Freshman team since Juliette Thevenin in 2010.
“We are extremely proud of her, no one has worked harder to deserve this award,” head coach Scott Swanson said.
Entering the final weekend of the season, Aubrey has the most double-doubles by a Gamecock freshman in 20 years, with 17 (sixth-most in a single season in program history). That total is also tops in the SEC this season. She leads the league in aces per set and ranks sixth in the SEC in assists per set. Among all freshmen in the NCAA, she ranks sixth in assists per set and seventh in aces per set.
In the program’s record books, she ranks fourth in program history for a single season in total assists (1105) and assists per set (10.42). Her 45 aces rank fifth in a single season in program history, and her 0.42 per set is fourth highest.
The Granbury, Texas native still has two more matches to climb to even more unprecedented heights. The Gamecocks will play at Arkansas Wednesday night, then wrap up the 2015 season at Missouri Sunday night.

Sports Imports is pleased to announce that Kennedy Hubbard is the inspiration behind the 2015 Sports Imports Courage Award

Sports Imports is pleased to announce that Kennedy Hubbard is the inspiration behind the 2015 Sports Imports Courage Award.  This past spring, the Sports Imports Family was privileged to meet Kennedy, a young woman who is unlike any we have encountered.
Kennedy’s young life began with a challenging condition called Lymphatic Malformations.  Lymphatic Malformations are rare non-malignant masses consisting of fluid-filled channels or spaces and can affect any area of the body (except the brain), but most commonly affect the head and neck.  The condition prohibited Kennedy from participating in any youth sports.  Instead of focusing on what she could not do, Kennedy and her family focused on what they could do. They created “Kennedy’s Cause”; a non-profit organization aimed at raising awareness about Lymphatic Malformations, funding research, and supporting families and children dealing with related medical issues.
Upon entering high school, Kennedy finally received her physician’s permission to play a sport; she chose volleyball. Kennedy quickly developed into a motivated and skilled setter, with a passion and love for the sport, her teammates and coaches.  After just four years of playing volleyball, Kennedy looked forward to playing for the Stockton University Ospreys in the fall of 2015.
Instead of celebrating her successes and all that she had overcome, Kennedy looked outward.  She wanted to give back to her fellow players, coaches and the community that supported her, her family and Kennedy’s Cause.  Kennedy’s dream was to construct two beach volleyball courts in her hometown of Moorestown, New Jersey.  On July 29, Kennedy saw that dream realized with the completion of two beach volleyball courts at Jeff Young Memorial Park, dedicated in her honor.
After hearing Kennedy’s story, the Sports Imports family was impressed with Kennedy’s humble demeanor, determination, selflessness, motivation and positive attitude.  The resounding virtue that came to mind? Courage.  Kennedy has displayed, and continues to display incredible courage in the face of adversity.  The team at Sports Imports agreed, this astounding young woman should be recognized among the volleyball community.
It is our privilege to announce that Kennedy Hubbard will be honored with the Inaugural Sports Imports/AVCA Courage Award at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Friday, December 18, 2015 in Omaha Nebraska.

Volleyball Injuries - Plantar Fasciitis What is It and What Can You Do to Treat It? By Beverly Oden Volleyball Expert

Volleyball is a sport that requires repeated pounding on the knees, ankles and feet. Every rally involves jumping and landing, sometimes off-balance and many players may eventually develop foot pain such as plantar fasciitis.
The plantar fascia is the tendon that connects the heel to the toes and supports the arch of the foot. Because the plantar fascia bears the brunt of the impact from the pounding of running and jumping, it has a tendency to break down and develop microscopic tears in the connective tissue.
When this happens, athletes will feel pain in the mid-foot or arch area.
Plantar fasciitis is a very common volleyball injury and it can persist for months or even years. If you have it, there are several things you can try in order to treat it. Not all of these methods work for everyone, so there may be some trial and error involved and it may take some time to solve your particular problem. Below are some techniques and tips that have worked for others.
Rest and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
If you have the luxury of being able to get off of your feet for a while this is probably your best course of action. Avoid putting weight on your feet as much as possible and don’t participate in high impact exercise for a while. The tiny tears will eventually repair themselves and your pain should subside.
Doctors also recommend icing your foot regularly and taking pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen, which reduce inflammation.
Massage and Stretching
Your trainer or physical therapist may also recommend stretching and massaging the feet as a treatment for plantar fasciitis or an addition to your warm-up routine.
As the pain worsens, the tendon gets tighter and tighter which can exacerbate the problem. Massage and stretching helps to lengthen the tendon and put it back into a relaxed state, which will help it to heal.
If you don’t have a masseuse on staff, grab a tennis ball and place it under one foot at the heel. Place all your weight on the ball under your heel and then take it off. Each time you remove your weight from the ball, slide it a little further up your foot and repeat until you reach the toes. Do this once per day and it will act as a mini-massage for your feet. If it is too painful to put all of your weight on the tennis ball, start in a sitting position and apply pressure to the ball that way until you can tolerate standing on it.
Athletic Tape
Because most athletes can’t or won’t take the time off to heal their injury, there are a few other methods that might help. If you have access to an athletic trainer/physical therapist or are pretty good with athletic tape, you can try applying athletic tape to your feet before you take the court. Taping up the bottom of your feet provides the arch support you need and helps to alleviate any pain you might be having in your heel or mid-foot and can get you through the game.
Athletic tape can be very effective in alleviating the pain of plantar fasciitis and is a cheap, quick and easy alternative to your other options. A plantar fasciitis tape job requires small strips of tape across the bottom of the foot secured by longer strips that wrap around the heel and twist across the arch. There are several instructional videos and websites that cover the application process for this type of tape job. Here is a particularly good example.
Orthotics
An orthotic is an insert placed inside the shoe that provides support to the foot wherever it is needed. There are many different types of orthotics available that utilize many different types of materials and they vary widely in price. You should always wear orthotics in both shoes even if only one foot is causing you pain. The imbalance caused by wearing just one orthotic can cause other problems including knee pain.
You can find a simple orthotic in most drug stores that you can purchase for $10-$20. These can be effective but if you have an unusual foot structure or more than one problem to address, you may find that you need more customization. If so, you can visit a podiatrist who can create a custom orthotic for you.
Custom orthotics involve taking a mold of your feet and creating an insert that provides support exactly where you need it. This process can be expensive – a custom orthotic can cost several hundred dollars – but if other methods don’t work, it can be worth every penny.
If you don't want to spend a large amount of money on a custom orthotic, there are somesemi-custom orthotics you can purchase for $50-$60 online and in certain drug stores. With an injury such as plantar fasciitis, there is no one cure-all that works for every person. Use what works for you and be willing to change your course if the method is not effective.

New champions crowned at AVP Kingston Chicago Open

AVP veterans Jenny Kropp and Ty Tramblie earn first career AVP titles

CHICAGO (August 30, 2015) –  The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour marked its return to Chicago after a five-year hiatus with an exciting weekend of competition, crowning new champions of the AVP Kingston Chicago Open in front of thousands of fans that packed Oak Street Beach on Sunday.

Olympian Nicole Branagh found her way back to the top of the podium alongside teammate Jenny Kropp, as the third-seeded duo won the women’s title with a 21-16, 21-19 victory over second-seededKim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten.

Brad Keenan and Ty Tramblie, seeded third in the men’s bracket, earned their first tournament title as teammates while also playing together for the first time. They upset top-seeded and previously undefeated Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, 21-19, 22-20, in the men’s final.

After falling to DiCello and Van Zwieten in the third round of the double-elimination tournament Saturday, Branagh and Kropp battled backed to secure a rematch in the finals. They advanced to a final for the second straight tournament and the third time this season. It was the first AVP tournament victory for Kropp, who joined forces with Branagh – now a 17-time AVP tournament winner – earlier this year.

Branagh and Kropp took down Amanda Dowdy and Heather McGuire, 21-19, 21-19 in the first women’s semifinal of the day, vaulting them to their second consecutive AVP final and third so far this season. The third-place finish marked a career best for Dowdy, who earned her previous career best result (fifth) alongside former partner Branagh.

DiCello and Van Zwieten took down top-seeded Lane Carico and Summer Ross, 21-16, 15-21, 15-13, in the other women’s semifinal to earn their first-ever finals appearance.  Carico and Ross – who entered the tournament by way of the open qualifier – have finished no lower than third in all three AVP tournaments the team has entered this season.

The number two and three women’s seeds had crossed paths earlier in the tournament, with DiCello and Van Zwieten besting Branagh and Kropp in a third-round winner’s bracket match on Saturday (21-17, 17-21, 18-16,) knocking Branagh/Kropp into the contenders bracket. Branagh and Kropp turned the tables in the final, needing only two games to earn the Chicago title over first-time finalists DiCello and Van Zwieten.

The top men’s seeds, Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, ousted second seeds Todd Rogers and Stafford Slick, 21-15, 22-20, in the semifinals. The second men’s semifinal also went three games, as third seeds Keenan and Tramblie battled the gritty team of Casey Jennings and Billy Kolinske – seeded fifth – to a 21-14, 19-21, 15-10 victory.

The 2015 AVP Tour will continue next weekend with the AVP Kingston Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.  The pro beach volleyball tournament, which has become a Labor Day tradition in Ohio, will feature the return of Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser – a three-time Cincinnati Open champion, Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy – also a three-time Cincinnati Open champion – and many more of the tour’s top players and 2016 Olympic hopefuls.

Phil Dalhausser captures fifth title and April Ross also repeats as champ at the 56th-annual AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer

Dalhausser’s fifth AVP Manhattan Beach Open championship is tied for second all-time;
Ross has won 10 of the last 11 AVP tournaments; Nick Lucena and Jennifer Fopma experience AVP Manhattan Beach Open glory for the first time

Manhattan Beach, Calif. (August 16, 2015) – Phil Dalhausser and April Ross took on different partners in defending their championships at the $200,000 AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer. Yet, the beat rolled on for both Olympians Sunday before a standing-room-only crowd around Stadium Court south of the Manhattan Beach pier.

2008 Olympic gold medalist Dalhausser won his fifth AVP Manhattan Beach Open title and helped partner Nick Lucena to his first in defeating Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-17 in the men’s final.

In the women’s final, 2012 Olympic silver medalist Ross repeated her AVP Manhattan Beach Open championship feat with fellow Costa Mesa, Calif. resident Jennifer Fopma as the top-seeded women downed 2008 U.S. Olympian Nicole Branagh and Jenny Kropp, 21-15, 26-24.

Dalhausser is tied with a host of players for second all-time in AVP Manhattan Beach Open championships, three short of AVP legend Karch Kiraly. Dalhausser won this event with Todd Rogers from 2006-08 and with Sean Rosenthal in 2014.

The third-seeded Dalhausser/Lucena partnership is somewhat of a back-to-the-future saga. Both finished runner-up a week ago at the AVP Seattle Open, which was the first time the duo had played together since October of 2005 – the same year the tandem was the AVP Manhattan Beach Open runner-up.

Winning on Sunday scratched that 10-year itch for the pair, which had not won an AVP event together since May 1, 2005 – the AVP Austin Open in Austin, Tex. Today’s victory set an AVP record for the longest span of time between AVP wins by the same team (10 years, three months).

“We lost 10 years ago in the (AVP Manhattan Beach Open) final. We got a second chance and that’s why it makes this so sweet,” said Dalhausser, a Manhattan Beach resident who won his 47th AVP title and played in his seventh AVP Manhattan Beach Open final in 10 starts. “I’m coming, Karch!”

“This is the best. I’m very excited,” added Lucena, a Florida native, who won his fourth AVP championship.

Ross and Fopma won their second AVP event in as many weeks, and Ross has won three of the four tournaments on the 2015 AVP Tour. Ross won the season-opening AVP New Orleans Open with her normal partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, who is recovering from a shoulder injury with plans to return later in the AVP season.

Further illustrating Ross’ dominant run on the AVP Tour, she has won 10 of her last 11 AVP tournaments, dating back to 2014, and 19 of her last 24 AVP starts going back to May 2010. Ross holds 23 AVP titles overall. Fopma earned her first plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier – to be unveiled next year’s AVP Manhattan Beach Open Walk of Fame pier ceremony – and third career AVP title.

Ross and Fopma reached the final after enduring a 21-16, 23-21 victory over second-seeded Emily Day, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy, a San Juan Capistrano, Calif. resident and Ross’ 2012 London Olympic Games partner.

Dalhausser/Lucena advanced to the final with a 21-14, 21-14 victory over upstarts Trevor and Taylor Crabb. The Crabb brothers, playing in an AVP main draw event for the first time, were the lowest seeded team (No. 13 seed) to reach an AVP Manhattan Beach Open semifinal this century and a semifinal on the AVP Tour since 2010.

Bourne/Hyden knocked off the tournament’s top two seeds this weekend and defeated No. 2 seed Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, last week’s AVP Seattle Open champions, 23-21, 18-21, 15-11, in a morning semifinal.

Branagh and Kropp, the 2011 and 2012 champion in Manhattan Beach, fought through the contender’s bracket after a second-round defeat on Friday and gained a 21-16, 21-18 semifinal victory over third-seeded Summer Ross, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Manhattan Beach resident Lane Carico.

Complete main-draw brackets and results are available here:

Women – http://avp.com/stats/manhattan-beach-open-2/ (Click on “Winner’s Bracket” and “Contender’s Bracket”)

In between the semifinals and finals, a full Stadium Court of fans were entertained by a Manhattan Beach Open Legends exhibition match featuring four-time AVP Manhattan Beach Open champion Randy Stoklos as the honorary coach and past AVP Manhattan Beach Open champions Mike Dodd, Tim Hovland, Sinjin Smith and Steve Obradovich on the sand they once conquered in an earlier era of beach volleyball.

The AVP Manhattan Beach Open, considered the “Wimbledon of beach volleyball,” is the longest-running, continuous pro beach volleyball tournament in the United States (since 1960).

The AVP thanks its partners – Acer, Samuel Adams, Barefoot Refresh, Kingston, Paul Mitchell, DripDrop, Jaybird and National Honey Board – for their support of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer.

The AVP Tour returns to Chicago for the first time since 2009 with its next stop at the AVP Chicago Open, along Oak Street Beach, from Aug. 27-30. The AVP Chicago Open is the fifth tournament of the 2015 AVP season.
