New champions crowned at AVP Kingston Chicago Open

AVP veterans Jenny Kropp and Ty Tramblie earn first career AVP titles

CHICAGO (August 30, 2015) –  The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour marked its return to Chicago after a five-year hiatus with an exciting weekend of competition, crowning new champions of the AVP Kingston Chicago Open in front of thousands of fans that packed Oak Street Beach on Sunday.

Olympian Nicole Branagh found her way back to the top of the podium alongside teammate Jenny Kropp, as the third-seeded duo won the women’s title with a 21-16, 21-19 victory over second-seededKim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten.

Brad Keenan and Ty Tramblie, seeded third in the men’s bracket, earned their first tournament title as teammates while also playing together for the first time. They upset top-seeded and previously undefeated Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, 21-19, 22-20, in the men’s final.

After falling to DiCello and Van Zwieten in the third round of the double-elimination tournament Saturday, Branagh and Kropp battled backed to secure a rematch in the finals. They advanced to a final for the second straight tournament and the third time this season. It was the first AVP tournament victory for Kropp, who joined forces with Branagh – now a 17-time AVP tournament winner – earlier this year.

Branagh and Kropp took down Amanda Dowdy and Heather McGuire, 21-19, 21-19 in the first women’s semifinal of the day, vaulting them to their second consecutive AVP final and third so far this season. The third-place finish marked a career best for Dowdy, who earned her previous career best result (fifth) alongside former partner Branagh.

DiCello and Van Zwieten took down top-seeded Lane Carico and Summer Ross, 21-16, 15-21, 15-13, in the other women’s semifinal to earn their first-ever finals appearance.  Carico and Ross – who entered the tournament by way of the open qualifier – have finished no lower than third in all three AVP tournaments the team has entered this season.

The number two and three women’s seeds had crossed paths earlier in the tournament, with DiCello and Van Zwieten besting Branagh and Kropp in a third-round winner’s bracket match on Saturday (21-17, 17-21, 18-16,) knocking Branagh/Kropp into the contenders bracket. Branagh and Kropp turned the tables in the final, needing only two games to earn the Chicago title over first-time finalists DiCello and Van Zwieten.

The top men’s seeds, Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, ousted second seeds Todd Rogers and Stafford Slick, 21-15, 22-20, in the semifinals. The second men’s semifinal also went three games, as third seeds Keenan and Tramblie battled the gritty team of Casey Jennings and Billy Kolinske – seeded fifth – to a 21-14, 19-21, 15-10 victory.

The 2015 AVP Tour will continue next weekend with the AVP Kingston Cincinnati Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.  The pro beach volleyball tournament, which has become a Labor Day tradition in Ohio, will feature the return of Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser – a three-time Cincinnati Open champion, Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy – also a three-time Cincinnati Open champion – and many more of the tour’s top players and 2016 Olympic hopefuls.

Phil Dalhausser captures fifth title and April Ross also repeats as champ at the 56th-annual AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer

Dalhausser’s fifth AVP Manhattan Beach Open championship is tied for second all-time;
Ross has won 10 of the last 11 AVP tournaments; Nick Lucena and Jennifer Fopma experience AVP Manhattan Beach Open glory for the first time

Manhattan Beach, Calif. (August 16, 2015) – Phil Dalhausser and April Ross took on different partners in defending their championships at the $200,000 AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer. Yet, the beat rolled on for both Olympians Sunday before a standing-room-only crowd around Stadium Court south of the Manhattan Beach pier.

2008 Olympic gold medalist Dalhausser won his fifth AVP Manhattan Beach Open title and helped partner Nick Lucena to his first in defeating Tri Bourne and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-17 in the men’s final.

In the women’s final, 2012 Olympic silver medalist Ross repeated her AVP Manhattan Beach Open championship feat with fellow Costa Mesa, Calif. resident Jennifer Fopma as the top-seeded women downed 2008 U.S. Olympian Nicole Branagh and Jenny Kropp, 21-15, 26-24.

Dalhausser is tied with a host of players for second all-time in AVP Manhattan Beach Open championships, three short of AVP legend Karch Kiraly. Dalhausser won this event with Todd Rogers from 2006-08 and with Sean Rosenthal in 2014.

The third-seeded Dalhausser/Lucena partnership is somewhat of a back-to-the-future saga. Both finished runner-up a week ago at the AVP Seattle Open, which was the first time the duo had played together since October of 2005 – the same year the tandem was the AVP Manhattan Beach Open runner-up.

Winning on Sunday scratched that 10-year itch for the pair, which had not won an AVP event together since May 1, 2005 – the AVP Austin Open in Austin, Tex. Today’s victory set an AVP record for the longest span of time between AVP wins by the same team (10 years, three months).

“We lost 10 years ago in the (AVP Manhattan Beach Open) final. We got a second chance and that’s why it makes this so sweet,” said Dalhausser, a Manhattan Beach resident who won his 47th AVP title and played in his seventh AVP Manhattan Beach Open final in 10 starts. “I’m coming, Karch!”

“This is the best. I’m very excited,” added Lucena, a Florida native, who won his fourth AVP championship.

Ross and Fopma won their second AVP event in as many weeks, and Ross has won three of the four tournaments on the 2015 AVP Tour. Ross won the season-opening AVP New Orleans Open with her normal partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, who is recovering from a shoulder injury with plans to return later in the AVP season.

Further illustrating Ross’ dominant run on the AVP Tour, she has won 10 of her last 11 AVP tournaments, dating back to 2014, and 19 of her last 24 AVP starts going back to May 2010. Ross holds 23 AVP titles overall. Fopma earned her first plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier – to be unveiled next year’s AVP Manhattan Beach Open Walk of Fame pier ceremony – and third career AVP title.

Ross and Fopma reached the final after enduring a 21-16, 23-21 victory over second-seeded Emily Day, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy, a San Juan Capistrano, Calif. resident and Ross’ 2012 London Olympic Games partner.

Dalhausser/Lucena advanced to the final with a 21-14, 21-14 victory over upstarts Trevor and Taylor Crabb. The Crabb brothers, playing in an AVP main draw event for the first time, were the lowest seeded team (No. 13 seed) to reach an AVP Manhattan Beach Open semifinal this century and a semifinal on the AVP Tour since 2010.

Bourne/Hyden knocked off the tournament’s top two seeds this weekend and defeated No. 2 seed Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, last week’s AVP Seattle Open champions, 23-21, 18-21, 15-11, in a morning semifinal.

Branagh and Kropp, the 2011 and 2012 champion in Manhattan Beach, fought through the contender’s bracket after a second-round defeat on Friday and gained a 21-16, 21-18 semifinal victory over third-seeded Summer Ross, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Manhattan Beach resident Lane Carico.

In between the semifinals and finals, a full Stadium Court of fans were entertained by a Manhattan Beach Open Legends exhibition match featuring four-time AVP Manhattan Beach Open champion Randy Stoklos as the honorary coach and past AVP Manhattan Beach Open champions Mike Dodd, Tim Hovland, Sinjin Smith and Steve Obradovich on the sand they once conquered in an earlier era of beach volleyball.

The AVP Manhattan Beach Open, considered the “Wimbledon of beach volleyball,” is the longest-running, continuous pro beach volleyball tournament in the United States (since 1960).

The AVP thanks its partners – Acer, Samuel Adams, Barefoot Refresh, Kingston, Paul Mitchell, DripDrop, Jaybird and National Honey Board – for their support of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer.

The AVP Tour returns to Chicago for the first time since 2009 with its next stop at the AVP Chicago Open, along Oak Street Beach, from Aug. 27-30. The AVP Chicago Open is the fifth tournament of the 2015 AVP season.

April Ross, Phil Dalhausser claim women’s and men’s semifinal berths in bids to repeat at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer

No. 1 men’s seed Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson shocked by brothers Trevor and Taylor Crabb, who claim final semifinal spot as 13th seed

Men’s final scheduled to begin Sunday at 1:30 p.m. PT, followed by women’s final at 3 p.m.;
Semifinal play begins Sunday at 9:30 a.m. PT; General admission is free

Manhattan Beach, Calif. (August 15, 2015) – Defending champions Phil Dalhausser and April Ross have put themselves in prime position to repeat as champions of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer, as both players won a pair of matches with their partners Saturday south of the Manhattan Beach pier to place themselves in Sunday’s semifinals at the 56th edition of America’s most historic, prestigious and popular beach volleyball tournament.

Ross and fellow Costa Mesa, Calif. resident Jennifer Fopma kept the momentum rolling from last weekend’s AVP Seattle Open title, as the top-seeded women dominated No. 4 seed Kim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten, 21-9, 21-14, to grab their semifinal berth. Ross and Fopma, who have not dropped a game in the tournament, defeated Ali McColloch and Emily Stockman, 21-19, 21-14 in their earlier match on Saturday.

Two weeks into their rekindled partnership, Manhattan Beach resident Dalhausser, a four-time AVP Manhattan Beach Open champ, and Santa Barbara’s Nick Lucena have yet to yield a game this weekend and exacted a measure of revenge from last weekend’s runner-up finish in the AVP Seattle Open final. The third-seeded duo cruised into the semifinals after knocking off No. 2 seed and AVP Seattle Open champions Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, 21-18, 21-9. Dalhausser/Lucena began the day by beating sixth-seeded Todd Rogers and Stafford Slick, 21-18, 21-17.

For fourth-seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden, there was no better place to snap a seven-match losing streak to top-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson than at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open. Manhattan Beach resident Bourne and Sherman Oaks resident Hyden combined for 28 kills to claim the first semifinal berth on Sunday and send Huntington Beach residents Gibb and Patterson to the contender’s bracket with a 21-17, 21-19 victory.

Prior to Saturday, Bourne/Hyden hadn’t beat Gibb/Patterson since the 2014 AVP Milwaukee Open in July 2014. It was the first time Bourne/Hyden got the upper hand on Gibb/Patterson in five meetings through all 2015 competitions. Bourne/Hyden defeated 2014 AVP Manhattan Beach Open champion Sean Rosenthal and Theo Brunner, 20-22, 21-19, 15-12, earlier in the day.

The day got worse for Gibb and Patterson – winners of this year’s AVP New Orleans Open and AVP Kingston New York City Open – as they shockingly fell to the No. 13 seed, brothers Trevor and Taylor Crabb, 29-31, 21-17, 16-14, in a marathon match to conclude the day’s action. It is the third AVP semifinal appearance for Trevor Crabb and the first for the younger Taylor Craff, and the biggest AVP triumph in the siblings’ history together.

Redondo Beach resident Rosenthal lost his opportunity to repeat as a champion, as he and Brunner lost a contenders’ bracket match to No. 19 seed Mark Burik and Curt Toppel, 17-21, 21-18, 22-20.

The battle for another women’s semifinal berth pitted a pair of former teammates who comprised one of the AVP’s top three women’s teams throughout 2014 – Carlsbad, Calif. resident Summer Ross and South Bay native Emily Day.

Ross and Manhattan Beach resident Lane Carico, the No. 3 seed, emerged with a narrow 21-19, 21-19 victory over second-seeded Day and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy, a San Juan Capistrano, Calif. resident. Ross and Carico have yet to drop a game in the four matches they have played in this tournament.

Sunday’s AVP Manhattan Beach Open schedule begins with the men’s semifinals (No. 3 seed Dalhausser/Lucena vs. No. 13 seed Crabb/Crabb; No. 4 seed Bourne/Hyden vs. No. 2 seed Doherty/Mayer) at 9:30 a.m. PT and the women’s semifinals (No. 1 seed April Ross/Fopma vs. No. 2 seed Day/Kessy; No. 3 seed Summer Ross/Carico vs. No. 5 seed Nicole Branagh/Jenny Kropp) at 10:30 a.m.

NBC Sports will broadcast the men’s final live at 1:30 p.m. PT, and the women’s final follows at 3 p.m. A special Manhattan Beach Open Legends exhibition match, featuring past champions of the legendary event, will take place on Stadium Court from 12-1 p.m.
