Top seeds go unscathed as the AVP hits the sand at Lake Sammamish State Park for first day of AVP Kingston Seattle Open

General admission is free, play continues Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

Seattle, Wash. (August 7, 2015) – The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour officially kicked off  the AVP Kingston Seattle Open, as main-draw action began Friday at Lake Sammamish State Park in the AVP’s return to the Emerald City for the first time in 25 years.

The top four men’s seeds advanced undefeated through Friday’s play and will face off in the men’s winner’s bracket quarterfinal matches, lining up top seeds Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah)/Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and fourth seeds John Mayer (Los Angles, Calif.)/Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.).

In their first tournament as teammates since 2005, Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena - seeded second - dominated on Friday, defeating 15th seeded Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, HI)/Spencer Mclachlin (Honolulu,HI)  21-15, 21-17 and seventh seeds Todd Rogers (Solvang, Calif.)/Stafford Slick (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) 21-16, 21-18. Dalhausser/Lucena will face third seeds Tri Bourne (Honolulu, HI)/John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) in the second winner’s bracket quarterfinal match on Saturday.

Women’s top seeds April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif) and Jen Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) also went undefeated on Friday, defeating 16th seeded Nicolette Martin (Anaheim, Calif.)/Allie Wheeler (Saratoga, Calif.) 21-12, 21-6 and eighth seeds Angela Bensend (Torrance, Calif.)/Geena Urango (Los Alamitos, Calif.)  21-16, 21-8 to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals where they will have a tough test against fifth seeds Nicole Branagh (Hawthorne, Calif.)/Jennifer Kropp (Redondo Beach, Calif.). 

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor (Long Beach, Calif.) made her return to the professional ranks on Friday, competing for the first time in three years (and the first time on the AVP Tour in five years) alongside longtime friend Brittany Hochevar (Hermosa Beach, Calif.). The team entered the main draw seeded 11th and came out of the gate strong delivering upsets to sixth seeds Allison McColloch (Solana Beach, Calif.)/Emily Stockman (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) 21-15, 21-19 and third seeds Lane Carrico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)/Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) 15-21, 21-23, 15-10.  May-Teanor/Hochevar’s next match is scheduled for Saturday at 11:10 a.m., when they will face second seeds Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif) in the first women’s quarterfinal match.

General admission for the AVP Kingston Seattle Open is free, and a limited number of VIP tickets are available for purchase at www.AVP.com or on site at the tournament.

Play in the double-elimination main-draw tournament continues Saturday at 9 a.m. and runs through Sunday’s tournament finals at 1:30 p.m. (men) and 3 p.m. (women). Saturday’s highlighted matches include:
-          Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor and Brittany Hochevar will face Olympic silver medalist Jen Kessy and Emily day in the first women’s quarterfinal match at 11:10 a.m.
-          Top seeded April Ross and Jen Fopma will face fifth seeds Nicole Branagh and Jennifer Kropp in a women’s bracket quarterfinal match at 1:20 p.m.
-          Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena will be featured in the first mens’ quarterfinal match against third seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden at 12:15 p.m.
-          Two-time Olympian Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson – the top seeded men’s team – will take on John Mayer and Ryan Doherty in a rematch of the AVP Kingston New York City Open championship, in the Seattle quarterfinal match at 2:25 p.m.
-          The highest seed to suffer a loss on Friday, fifth seeded Sean Rosenthal and Theo Brunner will face face Olympic gold medalist Todd Rogers and Stafford Slick in an contenders bracket elimination match scheduled for 10:15 a.m.
