TAVARES — The dress code was bikinis and board shorts with shoes optional Saturday morning at Lake County's new Hickory Point Beach on Lake Harris.
Sand-volleyball athletes came from across the country to play at the 21-court beach-volleyball complex during its grand opening. The facility is the largest of its kind in Florida and one of the largest in the Southeast, which sports and government honchos hope will lure top athletes and tourists, officials said.
The courts were the brainchild of Steve Bishop, executive director of the Florida Region of USA Volleyball and a longtime Lake County resident. The complex is a partnership between Bishop's group, Lake County government and the Lake County Water Authority, which owns the 3-acre former retention pond where the courts were built.
